How to read the data
Every H-1B job starts with a Labor Condition Application to the US Department of Labor, naming the occupation, the worksite and the offered salary. These pages count certified applications from the most recent year of published data, grouped by occupation.
Occupations follow the government's Standard Occupational Classification, so one page can cover many job titles — a “Backend Engineer” and an “Application Developer” are both Software Developers. Salaries are the wages offered on the applications.
Questions
- Which occupation is sponsored most on H-1B visas?
- Software Developers, by a wide margin, followed by other computer and data occupations. The list above is ordered by the number of certified applications.
- Is a certified application the same as a visa?
- No. It shows the employer intended to hire for that role on an H-1B; the petition still has to be approved by USCIS (and, for new workers, selected in the lottery).
- My job title isn't listed — where do I look?
- Find the occupation that matches your duties (for example, Data Scientists or Industrial Engineers). The free visa sponsor checker maps any job title to its occupation for you.
