How to write résumé bullets that prove impact

What makes a strong résumé bullet?

  • Start with an action verb — Led, Built, Reduced, Launched — not “Responsible for” or “Helped with”.
  • Show the result, with a number — time saved, revenue, users, error rate, team size.
  • Keep it to one or two lines (roughly 12–30 words).
  • Cut filler like “various”, “etc.” and pronouns (“I”, “my”).

A useful pattern: Action + what you did + measurable result. For example: “Rebuilt the checkout flow in React, lifting conversion by 12% in two months.”

Before and after

  • Before: Responsible for social media accounts. After: Grew Instagram following from 4k to 19k in 10 months with a weekly short-video series.
  • Before: Helped with month-end close. After: Cut month-end close from 8 to 5 days by automating three reconciliations in Excel and Power Query.
  • Before: Worked on the mobile app. After: Shipped offline mode for the iOS app, reducing 1-star reviews mentioning “connection” by 60%.

No numbers? Use these instead

Not every job has revenue figures. You can still quantify scope (team size, number of clients, budget), frequency (daily, 40 tickets a week), speed (turnaround time), or recognition (chosen to lead, promoted early). Honest estimates such as “~30%” are fine; invented numbers aren’t.

How many bullets per role?

Three to five for recent roles, one or two for older ones. Put the most impressive bullet first. Recruiters often read only the top line of each role. Need stronger openers? Try the action verb finder.
