How to Apply Through Workday: Résumé Tips and a Smoother Application
How Workday applications work — an account per employer, “Autofill with Resume”, the multi-step form — and how to format your résumé so fields fill in right.

Workday is one of the most widely used hiring systems at large employers, and it’s the one candidates complain about most. Not because it rejects people, but because the application takes longer: you create an account on each company’s Workday site, then check every field the system filled in from your résumé.
The good news is that most of that friction is predictable. A résumé that parses cleanly into Workday’s fields saves you ten minutes per application and keeps your profile accurate for the recruiter who searches it later.
How applying through Workday works
The exact steps depend on how each employer sets Workday up, but most applications follow this order:
- Create an account for this employer. Each company runs its own Workday site, so an account at one employer doesn’t carry over to another. Use the same email everywhere and a password manager; you’ll need the login to check your application status.
- Choose how to start. Most employers offer “Autofill with Resume” (upload and let Workday fill the form), “Apply Manually”, and sometimes “Use My Last Application”. Autofill is usually fastest — if your résumé parses well.
- My Information and My Experience. Contact details, then work history, education, skills and links, filled from your résumé. Review every entry: job titles, employers and dates are the fields recruiters filter on.
- Application questions and disclosures. Employer-specific questions (work authorisation, notice period, salary expectations), followed by voluntary disclosures where the law asks for them.
- Review and submit. A summary of everything. After submitting you can track the status from the candidate home page of that employer’s Workday site.
Formatting your résumé for Workday
- Give each role its own clear line: Job Title, Employer, Location, Month Year – Month Year. Autofill splits work history using these patterns.
- Use standard section headings — Experience, Education, Skills — so entries land in the right part of the form.
- Keep a single column. Text in sidebars and tables is often merged into the wrong field or dropped.
- Put your email and phone in the body of the page, not only in a header or footer.
- Workday’s Skills field is usually a type-ahead list. Keep a plain list of your core skills ready to add one by one; matching the job post’s wording helps recruiters who search by skill.
- Upload a text-based PDF or DOCX. A scanned PDF gives autofill nothing to read.

Common problems and fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| Two jobs at the same company merged into one | List each title with its own dates, even under one employer heading, then split them in the form if needed. |
| Dates missing or wrong after autofill | Use one date format throughout (Mar 2022 – Present). Seasons and years-only ranges are common causes. |
| Bullets pasted into the job title | Keep the title line short and on its own line; the description field takes the bullets. |
| Forgot which employers you have accounts with | Note the careers site URL and login email for every application in a tracker. |

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a new Workday account for every company?
Usually, yes. Each employer has its own Workday site, and accounts don’t carry over between them. Using the same email and a password manager keeps it manageable.
Should I use “Autofill with Resume” or apply manually?
Autofill is faster when your résumé has a simple, single-column layout with clear titles and dates. Either way, check every field before submitting — recruiters filter on titles, employers and dates.
Does Workday automatically reject résumés?
Employers can add knockout questions, such as work authorisation, but decisions are generally made by people reviewing and searching applications. The practical risks are fields filled incorrectly and missing the terms recruiters search for.
Can I edit a Workday application after submitting?
Typically not the submitted application itself. You can update your profile for future applications and withdraw from the candidate home page if the employer allows it.
